Frequently Asked Questions About:
Vaginoplasty
A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the vaginal canal and improves sexual function and enjoyment. It is often combined with a perineoplasty, which tightens the vaginal opening. These procedures also enhance the appearance of the vaginal opening. Additionally, vaginoplasty can reduce urinary incontinence by tightening the levator muscles and supporting the bladder and urethra.
Vaginal laxity can be caused by various factors, including childbirth, aging, hormonal changes, genetic factors, and overstretching. Women who have given birth may experience vaginal looseness due to the stretching and trauma of delivery. Hormonal changes associated with aging and menopause can also contribute to a loss of vaginal tone and elasticity. Some women may have a genetic predisposition to vaginal laxity. Additionally, significant weight gain and loss, chronic straining, or penetration by large partners can also contribute to vaginal laxity.
A stretched vaginal canal can occur due to various reasons. Vaginoplasty is beneficial for women with certain types of urinary incontinence, difficulty using tampons or vaginal devices, sexual dysfunction or dissatisfaction, and unwanted changes in genital appearance. Exercises and therapy can sometimes help tighten these muscles and improve the condition of the vagina. However, if these less invasive approaches do not achieve the desired results, vaginoplasty surgery may be necessary. Prior to the procedure, the patient’s health and potential positive outcomes should be assessed by an experienced plastic surgeon.
Vaginoplasty focuses on tightening the vaginal and perineal muscles to enhance sexual sensation for both you and your partner. However, it’s important to note that vaginoplasty is not a solution for common gynecological problems like bladder and rectal prolapse (aka cystocele and rectocele). These issues can worsen over time and require separate treatment. While fixing them won’t significantly increase vaginal tightness, addressing them is crucial for long-term health.
The procedure has associated risks such as infection, bleeding, temporary numbness, pain during intercourse, loss of sensation, and scarring. However, these risks can be minimized by selecting a skilled surgeon who is board-certified and employs cutting-edge surgical techniques.
Recovering from a vaginoplasty procedure typically requires 3-5 days of downtime and up to 6 weeks for full recovery. During this time, you may experience swelling, discomfort, and pressure. The vaginal packing will be removed the day after surgery, and you can start cleaning the incision and genital area as instructed by your doctor. Some patients may need a urinary catheter if they are unable to urinate immediately after surgery. It is possible to return to work after 4-5 days, depending on your surgeon’s advice. Swelling should decrease by the end of the second week, and it is important to avoid constipation during recovery. Avoid baths, hot tubs, and saunas for at least three weeks after surgery. You can safely resume sexual intercourse, exercise, and other activities after six weeks. Temporary urinary incontinence may occur due to swelling of the urethra, and some patients may need to use a dilator for gradual vaginal expansion. Additionally, vaginal stretching exercises and scar massage may be recommended.
The effects of the surgery will be noticeable after six weeks, once the vaginal swelling has subsided. Your final results will be visible and felt four to six months after the procedure, once you are fully healed. These results typically last around 10 years, depending on the extent of muscle tightness and subsequent stretching. Over time, muscles may naturally loosen, but they should not return to their pre-surgery laxity. To maintain long-term results, it is recommended that patients continue or start pelvic floor muscle exercises regularly.
Remember that pregnancy may affect your surgery results. Therefore, it is advisable to wait until you have finished having children before considering the vaginoplasty procedure.
After surgery, it is common for women to experience tightness due to stiff, inelastic, and swollen tissues. However, this tightness should improve as the healing process progresses. Patients are advised to do vaginal stretching exercises to assist in the healing process. Sexual intercourse can also help loosen the body naturally. Additionally, the use of larger vaginal dilators can help alleviate excessive tightness. For post-menopausal women, tissue elasticity may affect the tightness that can be achieved after surgery. A skilled surgeon should be aware of this and adjust the procedure accordingly. To ensure the best possible results, maintain open communication and discuss your desired level of tightness with your surgeon.
