Frequently Asked Questions About:
Facial Fat Transfer
Enhance your facial volume and rejuvenate your appearance with Facial fat transfer is a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure which uses your own body fat to add or restore volume to specific areas of your face. Specifically, this innovative technique, also known as lipofilling, can plump thin lips, enhance eyelid surgery results, smooth deep folds and lines, and even improve the appearance of acne scars.
Targeted fat injections can help rejuvenate areas such as the temples, forehead, glabella, hollow upper eyelids, under-eyes, cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, chin, and jawline. Not only do fat injections restore lost volume and reduce wrinkles, but they can also improve the appearance of pitted scars and rejuvenate crepey skin. With lipofilling, you will experience a more youthful and revitalized face.
During the initial stage, you and your surgeon will select the areas of the body from which excess fat will be removed using liposuction, done either under local or general anesthesia. The fat will be carefully extracted through a small incision in the chosen area. In the second stage, the fat cells will be purified by spinning them in a centrifuge and filtering out impurities. When it comes to the injection stage, your face will be numbed with local anesthesia and your surgeon insert a small cannula into the treatment area multiple times.
After your procedure, you may notice swelling, bruising, inflammation, and soreness at the injection sites. These symptoms should improve within 2 weeks. Additionally, the donor sites where liposuction was performed may also feel tender and swollen for a few days. To reduce puffiness, try keeping your face elevated on pillows. It is not recommended to apply ice as it can affect the survival of fat. In terms of skincare, use a gentle facial cleanser and avoid scrubbing until all inflammation has resolved.
You can expect to see the final results of your facial fat transfer approximately 9 months after the procedure. During the first three months, around 40-60% of the fat cells will naturally die off. To account for this loss, most surgeons slightly overfill the injected areas, resulting in a temporarily overfilled or puffy appearance. From three to four months, volume will be at its lowest point, and from four to nine months, surviving fat cells will gradually plump up. However, it’s important to note that some patients may experience minimal results if the majority or all of the transferred fat cells do not survive.
The results of the procedure are considered permanent. However, weight fluctuations can significantly impact the appearance of your face. Whether you gain or lose weight, it can cause the transferred fat cells to either shrink or grow, altering your proportions. If you lose weight after the procedure, the injected fat cells will not disappear, but they may decrease in size slightly.
Fat injections and temporary dermal fillers serve similar purposes in enhancing the appearance of the face. They can be used to add volume, contour the face, and reduce the visibility of wrinkles, creases, and folds. While most facial fillers are made of a synthetic gel called hyaluronic acid, fat injections involve using your own fat, which eliminates the risk of rejection or allergic reactions. Though less predictable, fat transfer results tend to last longer than temporary fillers. To determine the best option for you based on your specific needs, consult with a facial rejuvenation specialist.
Facial fat grafting is a safe cosmetic procedure, but like with any surgery, there are risks you should be aware of. These include infection, unsatisfactory outcomes, and asymmetry due to low fat survival rate. Potential risks also include hematoma, fat embolism, scarring, facial fat necrosis, and cyst formation. However, with ImagineHealth, you can trust that our highly experienced surgeons specialize in facial fat grafting with a proven track record of successful, long-term results.
