Frequently Asked Questions About:
Brow/Forehead Lift
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure that lifts sagging brows, smooths lines and wrinkles, and revitalizes the upper part of your face for a more youthful and alert appearance. Your surgeon will choose the most suitable brow lift technique based on your facial features and desired outcomes. While incisions are necessary for all types of brow lift procedures, their size and placement vary. This outpatient procedure can be combined with a facelift or eyelid surgery for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Ideal candidates for this procedure exhibit distinctive horizontal lines on their forehead, noticeable furrows between the eyebrows, or a naturally low-set brow that creates a fatigued, irate, or aged appearance. However, the procedure is not recommended for the individuals with normal or high-set eyebrows as it can result in a perpetually surprised and unnatural look.
The brow lift procedure can be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Your surgeon will choose the best technique for your specific facial anatomy and desired outcome. These techniques include endoscopic brow lift, open or coronal brow lift, hairline brow lift, temporal brow lift, browpexy, midbrow, and direct lifts. Factors such as deep horizontal forehead lines, brow thickness, brow asymmetry, forehead height, hairline position, hair color and density, and typical hairstyle all contribute to determining the most suitable technique for each patient.
Sections of hair will be secured away from the operative area. While some trimming may be necessary for the hair directly in front of the incision line, shaving your hair is not required for the surgery to be successfully carried out.
Recovery time after surgery typically ranges from one to two weeks, depending on the type of procedure you underwent. Whether you had an endoscopic or more invasive surgery, it’s important to allow time for rest and healing. During this period, you can expect swelling and bruising, which may last up to two weeks. To promote healing, it is advised to avoid exercise and strenuous activities for three to four weeks. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication and provide instructions on how long to keep the bandage on.
You will experience a noticeable transformation immediately after the procedure. During the first few weeks after your procedure, expect to look slightly surprised, as your brows gradually settle into a more natural position. While it is possible to notice some asymmetry initially, with one eyebrow appearing higher than the other, rest assured that this will even out as the swelling diminishes. In approximately six months, once all swelling has completely resolved, the final results will be fully visible.
Brow lift results have the potential to last up to a decade. However, aging will still cause sagging forehead skin over time. To combat this, regular use of medical-grade skincare and sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended. Additionally, occasional cosmetic procedures which enhance collagen production and improve skin firmness would help maintain the longevity of your brow lift results.
Forehead lifts are a low-risk plastic surgery option with minimal side effects. Although there may be some temporary discomfort, such as nausea or hair loss around the incision site, the overall complications are rare. Temporary numbness and tingling around the incision sites are also to be expected. However, in rare cases where serious issues arise, revision surgery may be necessary to address problems like overly raised eyebrows or significant brow asymmetry.
