A person before a case
ImagineHealth’s founder, Henning Kalwa, first knew Gabriel Iordache as a patient. Gabi later became a friend and colleague. Their relationship is part of the personal history behind ImagineHealth, extending well beyond the plastic-surgery work of Imagine Thailand.
Gabi lived with a serious spinal cord injury following a diving accident in his youth. In the original account, Henning recalled meeting him in Qingdao, China, while he was exploring treatment away from home. What remained most memorable was not a diagnosis or a treatment name, but his humor, determination and interest in other people.
A full life, on his own terms
The founding account described Gabi completing university, working in healthcare, supporting his parents and marrying. These details matter because they show a life that cannot be reduced to a medical condition. He was someone with ambitions, relationships and contributions of his own.
It would be wrong to turn his story into a promise about what another patient can achieve. Personal resilience is not a treatment, and optimism cannot guarantee recovery. His example instead reminds us to listen carefully to what matters to the individual.
From friendship to shared work
Henning’s earlier work involved helping people navigate unfamiliar treatment options and international care. Gabi became part of that work, bringing the perspective of someone who understood the experience of being a patient far from home.
The original article also discussed experimental and specialized approaches to spinal cord injury. This updated reflection does not use those experiences as evidence of treatment effectiveness or as an offer of care through Imagine Thailand. A personal account cannot establish that a treatment is suitable, proven or available for someone else.
What his memory asks of us
Gabi died in 2020. His friendship continued to influence the thinking behind ImagineHealth: healthcare decisions involve people with real hopes, fears and responsibilities. Helping them requires more than presenting a list of services.
That principle carries into our work today. We help clarify options, ask relevant questions and identify appropriate expertise. We should also make uncertainty visible, explain our role and leave clinical recommendations with the treating professionals.
A broader purpose, a defined role
Imagine Thailand focuses on plastic surgery, while ImagineHealth’s wider involvement spans Thailand’s healthcare ecosystem. Our founding story explains the motivation behind that work. It does not make us a hospital, surgeon or treatment provider.
Choose Exceptionally Well. is an expression of the responsibility we take seriously: helping people make considered choices in situations where the decision deserves individual attention.
