CARE AND CREDENTIALS

How to Assess Specialist Experience in Thailand

Relevant expertise is more specific than a reputation: ask how training, clinical focus and experience relate to your particular case.

Begin with the specialist foundation

Identify the actual surgeon, their medical registration and relevant specialist qualifications. Thailand’s Medical Council offers license verification. Ask which organization issued a specialist credential and what it represents.

Do not assume a familiar overseas qualification label has the same meaning in every country. A verified license is essential background, but procedure-specific experience still requires discussion.

Define what makes your case distinctive

Previous surgery, scar tissue, asymmetry, a functional concern or significant health conditions may change the expertise needed. Describe these circumstances clearly. Ask whether the surgeon regularly assesses cases with the features relevant to yours.

A surgeon offering many procedures is not automatically the right person for a demanding revision or a particular technique. Relevance matters more than the length of the service list.

Listen to the recommendation

Ask why the proposed approach fits your anatomy and priorities. A considered explanation includes alternatives, limitations and reasons to avoid certain interventions. The consultation should make room for questions rather than move directly to a booking.

Technique labels can be informative, but they do not establish an outcome. Ask how the surgeon adapts the method and what trade-offs apply to you.

Put photographs and volume in context

Before-and-after images can support a conversation about goals. Lighting, position, healing stage and differences between patients affect interpretation. Other people’s results cannot predict yours.

A busy practice may indicate experience, but procedure count alone is not a quality measure. Ask about the nature of the cases, the surgeon’s role, follow-up and management of complications.

Expertise operates within a team

Anesthesia, nursing, the operating facility and access to additional care are also relevant. Ask who handles each stage and how concerns are escalated.
